Institut de France, Academies, historic sites and a dialogue for the future
The Rencontres Capitales are the great international debate of ideas of the the Institut de France, which takes place with the Science Academy, the Académie française, the Académie des Inscriptions et belles-lettres, the Académie des beaux-arts, the Académie des sciences morales et politiques, the Bibliothèque Mazarine, the Académie des technologies and the Académie nationale de médecine will take part.
20 foreign academies are also invited to contribute to the reflection process.
These debates will help share knowledge and break down disciplines, to better understand the crises and the scientific, technological, environmental and sociological transformations of our world.
From 19 to 21 November 2021, the attendees of the Rencontres Capitales will meet under the Dome, in the Grand Chamber and in the new auditorium of the Institut de France, but also in the Académie nationale de médecine.
In the course of 35 debates, scientists, business leaders, political and community leaders, philosophers, intellectuals, artists — who observe and change the world — will engage in a dialogue with an audience of 15,000, mostly made up of students and young professionals.
The 2021 edition of the Rencontres Capitales will also host the 17th Night of Philosophy.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
The Rencontres Capitales were created in Marseille in 2011 by the production company Au fil de l’eau and Christian Auboyneau, within the framework of Marseille European Capital of Culture. Lyon also hosted the Rencontres Capitales for the 40th anniversary of the Université Lyon II.
In 2016, the Rencontres Capitales arrived at the Institut de France, for the 350th anniversary of the Académie des Sciences.
Les Rencontres Capitales 2021, is the 6th edition organized at the Institut de France.

Five academies work at the Institut de France, a prestigious and historic venue, the theatre of the greatest discoveries and ideas. These academies are: the Académie des sciences, the Académie française, the Académie des Inscriptions et belles-lettres, the Académie des beaux-arts, the Académie des technologies and the Académie des sciences morales et politiques.
The Palais is also home to the Bibliothèque Mazarine, the oldest public library in France.
